History

Founded 1925 as private Civic College in Helsinki, became School of Social Sciences 1930 and transferred to Tampere 1960. Formerly known as Yhteiskunnallinen korkeakoulu. Acquired present status and renamed University of Tampere 1966. An autonomous institution until August 1974, financed by the State 75%, by the city of Tampere 20%, and by student fees 5%. Subsequently under the supervision of the Ministry of Education and entirely financed by the State. Merged with Tampere University of Technology and acquired current title 2019. Tampere University is part of the Tampere Universities community.
Tampere University is part of the Seinäjoki University Consortium (UCS) which brings together Helsinki University of the Arts - Sibelius Academy, University of Vaasa, University of Turku, the University Association of South Ostrobothnia, the Natural Resources Institute Finland and the Migration Institute of Finland. The Seinäjoki University Consortium is one of six university consortia in Finland and is coordinate by Tampere University.
Three faculties of Tampere University, namely the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences, and the Faculty of Management and Business, are represented in the Pori Unit
