Basic education covers nine years leading to the Basic Education Certificate. Secondary education covers three years. After a common first-year curriculum, students choose either the scientific or literary track for the remaining two years. The Al-Thanawiya examination is taken at the end of the third year. There are several technical secondary schools, vocational training centres, a agricultural secondary schools. There are also religious institutes which concentrate on Islamic education. Vocational secondary education also leads to the Al Thanawiya after three years or to vocational certificates.
Higher Education System
Higher education is provided by several public and private universities. Admission is based on the Al Thanawiya. In public universities, a score of at least 80 per cent is required for admission to the Faculties of Medicine and Engineering. For the Faculties of Science, Agriculture and Commerce, the requirement is 65-70 per cent and 50-60 for the Faculties of Law, Education and Arts.

University level first stage : Diploma
Description:Some universities offer a Diploma after two years of study in certain fields (e.g. Electronics, Information Technology, Pharmacy, Dentistry, etc..).
University level second stage : Bachelor's degree
Description:Studies for the Bachelor's degree last between four and six years. It is conferred in such fields as Arts, Science, Medicine, Engineering and Law. In Engineering it requires five years and in Medicine six years.
University level third stage : Master's degree
Description:The third stage leads after two years' study beyond the Bachelor's degree to the Master of Arts or the Master of Science degree. The Master's degree in Engineering is one year after the five-year Bachelor's degree in Engineering.

Al Thanawiya
Description:Secondary school leaving certificate obtained after twelve years' basic and secondary education.
Diploma
Description:Qualification awarded by some universities after short courses (two years) in such fields as dentistry, pharmacy, electronic engineering, computer engineering)
Bachelor's Degree
Description:Bachelor degree courses normally last for four to six years (five years in science and engineering, six in medicine).
Licence
Description:First terminal degree awarded after four years' study in the field of art
Postgraduate Diploma
Description:Postgraduate qualification obtained two years after a first degree
Master's Degree
Description:Higher degree awarded after at least two years' study following upon the bachelor's degree or diploma in education, geography, history, economics, commerce and law, and agricultural engineering. Students must present a dissertation.
PhD
Description:Degree awarded after 2-3 years of research and study, following the Master's degree.
