Description of School System

Primary education lasts for six years leading to the Certificat d'Etudes primaires élémentaires (CEPE). There is an entrance examination to access secondary education. First cycle secondary education lasts for four years and is taken at a Collège. It leads to the Brevet d'Etudes du premier Cycle (BEPC). The second cycle lasts for three years and takes place in a Lycée. It leads to the Baccalauréeat unique that gives access to higher education.Technical and vocational education last for three years in vocational schools and lead to the Brevet d'Etudes professionnelles.

Structure

Higher education is provided by public and private universities and institutes. Higher education institutions are under the responsibility of the Ministère de l'Enseignement supérieur et de la Recherche scientifique and follows the three-tier LMD system.

Stages of Higher Education

Non-university level

Description:National professional schools (A type) train middle-level personnel who have completed Grade 13 and passed an entrance examination. Training lasts for three years and leads to the Brevet de Technicien supérieur.


University level first stage : Licence

Description:The Licence is awarded after three years' study.


University level second stage : Master

Description:A further two years beyond the Licence lead to the Master.


University level third stage : Doctorat

Description:This is the third cycle of higher education. Entry to the course is based on the Master. Students must submit a thesis.

Training of HE Teachers

Higher education teachers must hold a Master or a Doctorat.

Baccalauréat

Description:The Baccalauréat is conferred after six years of primary education followed by seven years of secondary education. It is one of the prerequisites for entry to higher education, together with a competitive entrance examination.


Brevet de Technicien supérieur

Description:Professionally-oriented diploma awarded in some institutions after three years' study.
