Primary education lasts for six years. Secondary education consists of two streams: general secondary education and technical and vocational education. General secondary education is divided into two streams: general secondary education in the restricted sense (HAVO) and more academically-oriented secondary education (VWO). The HAVO Certificate is awarded on completion of a four-year course of general secondary education, not including the transition year. The Certificate gives access to higher professional education (HBO). The VWO Certificate is awarded after five years of pre-university education, not including the transition year. The VWO Certificate gives access to universities as well as HBO. Technical and vocational education (VSBO) are divided into a basic, middle and higher level. The Certificate is awarded after four years of study for one of the three levels. All the tracks are directed to guide pupils to a higher form of professional training (SBO) in accordance with the implicit objective of the national education policy.
Higher Education System
Higher education is provided by the University of Curaçao (previously the Universiteit van de Nederlandse Antillen). It is an autonomous institution and its governing bodies are the Board of Trustees and the University Council.

Accreditation Agency of Curaçao - AAC
Role:An independent and professional accrediting agency for higher education and officially recognized by the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of Curaçao. Its role is to promote quality assurance in education and professional training. The AAC was established to accredit degree programs at universities, universities of applied sciences, colleges and professional schools (bachelor, master and doctoral study programs) and higher education institutions in Curaçao as well as abroad. The AAC conducts procedures for the accreditation of educational programs in all disciplines (program accreditation) as well as procedures for the accreditation of educational institutions.

During the last three years, pupils prepare for an examination in seven to eight subjects in one of three different profiles. The VWO certificate gives admission to universities as well as to HBOs.

Professional Training Certificate
Description:Courses in a wide variety of professional training. Diploma awarded after two to four years of theoritical and practical training. The 4-year courses give access to higher education (HBO).
Licensed Teacher Certificate
Description:Certificate awarded after a four-year course at HBOs, including one-and- a- half year of supervised teaching practice, leading to being a primary school teacher.
Propedeuse
Description:Intermediate qualification obtained after one to two years' study in law and social and economic sciences.
Bachelor's Degree
Description:The Faculty of Engineering grants a bachelor's degree in four fields: civil engineering, architecture, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering. The Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences grants a bachelor's degree in business administration, accounting, management information systems, public administration and economics. Studies last for four years (or two years after propedeuse). A bachelor's degree is also offered in four-year courses in teacher-training in languages (Papiamentu, Dutch, English). The Bachelor's Degree is also offered at HBOs.

Description:Degree conferred after four-and-a-half years' study in law.
Master's Degree
Description:Postgraduate degree awarded two years after the bachelor's degree in such fields as business administration and accounting.
