Campus of Charles University is located in three cities of the Czech Republic: Prague, Hradec Kralove, Plzen

Founded 1348 by King Charles IV. Became a State institution 1773 when the Society of Jesus was dissolved. Divided in 1882 into separate Czech and German universities each bearing the title Charles-Ferdinand. Present title adopted 1918. Closed in November 1939 during the German occupation; reopened 1945 at which time the German university was abolished. Acquired present status 1999. Was previously know as Charles University in Prague (Univerzita Karlova v Praze).

Holders of the academic degree of “Magistr” are entitled to take an advanced Master’s (“rigorózní”) state examination in the same area of study and defend an advanced Master’s (“rigorózní”) thesis. They are awarded the following academic degrees:
a) “Doktor práv” (“Doctor of Law”, abbreviated as “JUDr.”, used in front of the name) in the field of law;
b) “Doktor filozofie” (“Doctor of Philosophy”, abbreviated as “PhDr.”, used in front of the name) in the area of the humanities, teacher education and the social sciences;
c) “Doktor přírodních věd” (“Doctor of Natural Sciences”, abbreviated as “RNDr.”, used in front of the name) in the area of the natural sciences;
d) “Doktor farmacie” (“Doctor of Pharmacy”, abbreviated as “PharmDr.”, used in front of the name) in the field of pharmacy;
e) “Licenciát teologie” (“Licentiate of Theology”, abbreviated as “ThLic.”, used in front of the name) or “Doktor theologie” (“Doctor of Theology”, abbreviated as “ThDr.”, used in front of the name) in the field of theology; for the field of Catholic theology “Licenciát teologie”.
It is the same degree level as "Doktor medicíny" ("Doctor of Medicine", abbreviated as "MUDr.”, used in front of the name - see above) and “Zubní lékař” (“Doctor of Dental Medicine”, abbreviated as “MDDr.” used in front of the name-see above). Both these studies are directly finished by the advanced Master’s (“rigorózní”) state examination.
All these degrees are Master level (i.e. level 7 of the ISCED 2011). Sometimes they are called "small doctorate" - please do not confuse with "doctor" at the level of 8 of ISCED 2011
