History

Established in 1836 as a secular alternative to Oxford and Cambridge, the University of London became the first to explicitly exclude religious qualification as an entry requirement. It was also the first University in the UK to give external students the opportunity to continue to earn a living while studying, and to study privately and take exams without attending on campus; as well as the first to admit women.
Since then, University of London has expanded and modernised, becoming a pioneering institution with global impact and reach.
Today, UoL has 120,000 students across its campuses in London, and 50,000 in 190 countries taking UoL degrees through online, flexible and blended transnational provision. It comprises a federation of central member institutions and research institutes that include world leaders in their fields: Birkbeck, University of London; City, University of London; Courtauld Institute of Art; Goldsmiths, University of London; Institute of Cancer Research; King's College London, London Business School, London School of Economics and Political Science; London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine; Queen Mary University of London; Royal Academy of Music; Royal Central School of Speech and Drama; Royal Holloway, University of London; Royal Veterinary College; School of Advanced Study; School of Oriental and African Studies; St George's, University of London; UCL; and University of London Institute in Paris
