Founded 1955 as Tashkent Electrotechnical Institute of Communications, acquired present status and title 2003. Nukus, Urgench, Karshi, Samarkand and Fergana branches were reorganized in 2005 as regional branches. In 2018, the university introduced a credit system of education.
An agreement was signed to set up a dual degree program and joint training of specialists with higher education between the university and the Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radio Electronics. In accordance with this agreement, starting from the 2019-2020 academic year, students enrolled in TUIT in the joint faculty of TUIT-BSUIR for training in the following areas: Information Technology Software; Programmable Mobile Systems; Artificial Intelligence.
