Founded 1893 as Normal School, originally privately owned, ownership was transferred to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and renamed East Stroudsburg State Normal School 1920, acquired right to confer Bachelor's degrees and renamed State Teachers College at East Stroudsburg 1927, renamed East Stroudsburg State College 1960, acquired present status and title 1983.
